Wargaming for Charity
What looked to be a bit of a slow start to CanOpener 2012 resolved into a relaxing and enjoyable day of gaming.
The numbers were a bit low, but the results of the day were really rewarding. With every player walking away with something from the event, whether it be a podium prize, a spot prize or a feeling of just having had a really good day at the Auckland City Guard Club. We had in our midst a very welcome contingent of board gamers, amongst them a couple of familiar faces, who it was good to see.
Another welcome addition to the event was the representation from the Auckland City Mission. James was a great sport. He was very intrigued by the whole gaming thing. I introduced him to Fantasy, and in true City Guard spirit, he whooped me Smiley. James then joined in with the boardgamers
and afterwards had a game of FOW. I get the impression that we may have a new member soon Wink
I expect the other TO’s will like to comment on their games, but instead of stealing their thunder, I will just mention a couple of the Fantasy Highlights.
First place, after a bit of an absence from the club, was Nick (Captain Softscores), 2nd place to Logan (First Tournament) , 3rd place Graeme (Nerdymen).
Steve was there with Flames of War. He umpired a game for 4 newbies, Daryl (Big D) took out first place there. I got a chance to join in and even I had some successes with the game, getting Daryl to roll dice for me probably helped Smiley.
I need to mention a word of thanks here:
Thank you to Battle front miniatures, who sent over a large box of cans, as well as some very generous prizes.
Thank you to Slave to Painting, who sent in a whole heap of spot prizes, which were scattered between the games appropriately. I know Aaron Cue appreciated his spot prize, as we have been talking recently about Mantic models.
Thank you to my wife, for running the kitchen (Archenemy will be the next to benefit from my wife’s cooking).
And last, but not least, thank you to all the gamers, who made set-up and pack up an enjoyable part of the event.
Can tally: 500 cans to The Auckland City Mission. Target for next year: 1000?
Direct Cash donation to The Auckland City Mission: $135

Guardsman Trophy WHFB
Nice and chilly outside means its time for some juicey games of warham! The ACG's winter league is back with us again and is a great warm up for the up and coming big club convention GuardCon 2012.
Contested over 6 games where you get a whole three months before GuardCon to play and get the results to us. The first four rounds can be played at any location with GuardCon restrictions of course. With no sports or painting you're required to play like gentlemen and scholars. Entry is $5 and more details when you express your interest to wouster7@hotmail.com. It's a nice and cruisey bunch of games and will be a great chance to test some army builds and to meet some new and old warhammer players.

CanOpener and BoardGames
Another excellent charity event for The City Mission this year which we hold annually at the Club and the convention is "CanOpener". With all proceeds and Cans of food donated by all attending going towards the needy it's a event you should be getting out ya door and be supporting. Not to worry it's on again around the same time next year. This year we saw some great competitors and some good prizes from our sponsors too. Honorary mention especially to "Slave to Painting", " Battle Front Miniatures", & Mister Minute.
We had some brilliant ranges of Board Games at the event too and SchilMil Games was gracious in attending and brought their NZ new designed game to the venue for us to try out. Really quick to learn and designed for the whole family it looks like it will do very well and "Komodo", is available at all your games stockists.
CanOpener finishes for another year and next on the calendar is GuardCon Here
Just some of the great supporters and winners at the event.

One of my favourites was also there on the weekend and it was great to break it out and have a 5 player game of it. Quick to play and a classic German board game of the genre. I highly recommend it and with a hot cup of coffee and a few biscuits this is a great winter staple.

Equinox 2012 Results
Equinox Tournament WFB Results
Brilliant weekend and really proud to have hosted all the
fine wargamers that made this the biggest tournament by far I've been involved
in hosting. Although we have a big base of wargamers in Auckland the great
response from the community all around the country made this tournament the big
success that it was. A big thank you goes out to those of you who flew or
travelled those extra miles to making the great atmosphere that a big tournament
makes. So without further delay here is the results.
Best Sports: Glen Tibbles
Edit:
Strengths in NZ Wargaming:
With Wellington, Tauranga and Invercargill taking the podiums for the WFB tournament it bodes very well for the health of the hobby in NZ. Even though Auckland may boast the greatest population in terms of player base only one Aucklander managed a top ten finish in the tournament.
The tournament had well over 60 contestants interested in the 50 WFB spots in the competition, with late withdraws due to work or family reasons the tournament was reduced to 48. Further withdraws during the week meant that come tournament day there were contestants not participating that were on the tournament list. With this kind of response and no last minute timing conflicts I don't see why we can't steadily work towards my goal over the past year or so of developing the hobby and N.Z's wargaming participation. This being my last tournament as TO I'd like to thank all competitors and fellow organisers who have shared my common goal and volunteered their time to building the New Zealand tournament and wargaming scene. With the huge participation of all the systems at Equinox I'm sure you as the competitor will continue to support the guys who will be running tournaments in the future. The Next big tournament in Auckland will be Nicon and details can be found here Here.
Playing with Stats:
With Equinox hosting the largest 8th ed tournament in NZ it's great to see some of the internets not so fancied armies also sharing space with the top ten finishers. No Surprises with Ogres, WoC or Empire, but TK and Beasts the more unfancied cousins in the current edition of the game makes a surprise appearance in the top ten at Equinox. Tournament performance often comes down to List design and your overall performance rather than luck so I thought I'd look at some of the stats taking into account the 3 most recent tournaments in NZ. I've used the average Army placing and by eliminating the last result where I could to stabilise as much statistical bias due to small a sample size. This is what I got which makes for interesting reading.
So statistically speaking in this country the top three armies are far removed from the big two countries of warhammer the UK & US. I would agree with the results some what as Warriors and Lizards tend to be able to get solid points in a tournament which they are favoured in and Empire if run right and maximise their shooting all six turns could very much also maximise their battle points. Lower on the table Wood Elves are still a good army but struggle to get maximum battle points due to the nature of the army and hence are not so good at tournament finishes.
Nb: Sample size is small and top 10 results were the only data used where able to minimise conflicting data. Statistical analysis is for snapshot trend only.

Best Sports: Glen Tibbles
Best Paint: Graeme Fry, can be found Here
Best Emerging Player: Michael Fenner
Well played to the veteran of the community Pete Dunn who showed that Ogres
are the new black. A special mention has to go to Ross Hiller- Jones and Tim
Joss, whom collected the other podiums for such a tight finish. The Podium
finishers all played each other and with Pete beating Tim, Tim beating Ross and
Ross beating Pete in their match ups, it proved there was very little in it
duking it out at the top of the field. This is also the first tournament that
I've had the pleasure of meeting Ross and it seems that Tauranga is going from
strengths to strengths with a second place finish this time around.
